This research will describe what learners have to take into account when communicating appropriately and effectively in a discourse community. It tries to describe speech of twelve foreign students, who participate in the program of Darmasiswa Undip 2010/2011, when interacting with Indonesian native speakers. In this research study, in addition to Indonesian, there are seven other languages used by the students during interactions. Besides Indonesian, English is the most often language used by the students. The common reason is that English was used by the students to help their interlocutors understand what they meant. There are thirteen exchange patterns of speech in the interactions. Pattern [I] is the most dominant in any interactions. In classroom interactions, pattern [I] is dominated by the lecturers. In interactions outside of the classroom, this pattern is quite often used by the students. Based on quantitative analysis, the speech of foreign students in classroom interactions are relatively low in number. Meanwhile, in the interaction outside of the classroom, the same foreign students perform quite a lot of speech. This proved that foreign students are less active in the classroom and more active when they do interactions outside of the classroom. They also perform a variety of communication strategies in order to make their interactions more communicative. Finally, this study reports that most foreign students do some linguistic errors during interactions.
