Summary:Background Heart failure is a clinical syndrome caused by abnormalities of cardiac structure or function. A condition when the heart as a pump can't fulfill body's blood demand to keep tissue's metabolism well. Heart failure is a burgeoning problem worldwide that decreases quality of life and its prevalence follows an exponential pattern, rising with age. Pharmacological therapeutic guidance had been issued as direction and recommendation for medical doctor to give therapy to heart failure patients, one of which is spironolactone. In patients with chronic heart failure became the drug of choice to block the effects of aldosterone mediates damage to the heart, kidneys and blood vessels. Objective To determine the frequency description of prescribing spironolactone in heart failure patients in the Dr. Kariadi Semarang Central Hospital. Methods It was a descriptive study. Research data were collected from medical records of heart failure patient who were hospitalized since January until March 2014 at Dr. Kariadi Semarang Central Hospital . Data were collected with consecutive sampling method. The sample size used total sampling method. Description include the frequency of prescribing spironolactone to patients with heart failure. Spironolactone is prescribed by the doctor in charge, written in the patient medical record. Result Data found that patients with heart failure who are hospitalized in the Hospital Dr. Kariadi period January - March 2014 which met the inclusion criteria , there were 108 patients(76,6%) who received spironolactone and 33 patients (23,4%) didn't receive it. Conclusion There were 76,6% patients who received spironolactone and 23,4% patients didn't receive it. The number of patients with heart failure who are hospitalized period January - December 2014 amounted to 1,284 patients. The prevalence of heart failure patients who are hospitalized by sex is almost the same. Based on the highest age in the adult, followed by old age, and adolescent.Prescribing percentage other types of heart failure medications varied enough which the highest is furosemide and lowest are propranolol, irbesartan and dobutamine.
