The success of exclusive breastfeeding is not affected by parity, there was only 51.30% multiparous mothers who exclusively breastfed in Puskesmas Ngesrep, that was below the national target of achieving exclusive breastfeeding 80%. This study aims to describe the factors that influence the failure of exclusive breastfeeding in mothers' multiparas in Puskesmas Ngesrep Semarang. Researchers used descriptive survey of 95 multiparous mothers who failed to provide exclusive breastfeeding for children aged 0-24 months using a total sampling technique. The results showed 55 (57.9%) of respondents have good enough knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, 73 (76.8%) of respondents did not do early initiation of breastfeeding (IMD), 66 (69.5%) birth is assisted by midwives, 53 (55.8%) of respondents said the husband give support of exclusive breastfeeding. IMD is the biggest factor in this study, which IMD will increase the probability of failure of exclusive breastfeeding because IMD is a way to introduce ASI for the first time to newborn baby , the midwife as the majority of birth attendants have an important role in the success of IMD, without the help and facilities from the midwife mother cannot give IMD independently. Suggestions for further research is to investigate the cause of the failure of the IMD which is the biggest factor affecting the failure of exclusive breastfeeding in this study.
