Description
Summary:Background: Rhinitis allergy and asthma are related in causing allergic reactions in the respiratory tract. One of the abnormalities is the accumulation of eosinophils in the lung, resulting toxic to the tissue. Ovalbumin (OVA) can trigger allergic reactions. Zinc supplementation, works as cytoprotectant, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant, is estimated to reduce the number of eosinophils in the lung. Objective: Proving the effect of zinc supplementation on the number of eosinophils in the lung histopathologic preparations of BALB/c mice that were sensitized with OVA. Method: Post Test Only Control Group Design experiment. The sample consists of 18 female BALB/c mice were divided into 3 groups; negative control group (K1), positive control group with OVA sensitization (K2), and group of mice with OVA sensitization and 5mg/Kg body weight zinc supplementation (P). The treatments were given for 30 days. After that, the number of eosinophils in the lung histopathologic preparations of BALB/c mice that were sensitized with OVA were counted. Results: The mean eosinophils count in negative control group (K1) was 0.48, positive control group (K2) was 2.12, and group of mice with OVA sensitization and 5mg/Kg body weight zinc supplementation (P) was 0.76. The number of eosinophils in the lung in P group was significantly lower than K2 group in Anova Test which followed by Post Hoc Test (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Zinc supplementation reduces the number of eosinophils in the lungs of BALB/c mice that were sensitized with OVA. Keywords: Zinc, ovalbumin, eosinophil, rhinitis allergy, asthma
