520 |a Background: Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that is increasing in many countries around the world. The recommended first line treatment for treating patients with gonorrhea is ceftriaxone. The high rate resistance of ceftriaxone requires doctors search for new alternatives for the treatment of gonorrhea. Levofloxacin is one alternative medicine for the treatment of gonorrhea. Aim: To assess the difference in sensitivity of Neisseria gonorrhoeae towards levofloxacin and ceftriaxone in in vitro. Methods: This research used a cross sectional, analytic observasional study which examined 60 subjects with positive purulent discharge. The samples obtained Gram staining to find negative gram diplococci bacteria. A total of 29 samples were found then cultured on Thayer Martin and incubated at 370 celcius for 48 hours. After growing colonies, samples tested for definitive test that consist of oxidation and fermentation test. Then a total of 26 samples tested positive for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, colonies on Thayer Martin cultured on Mueller Hinton for sensitivity testing. After 24 hours incubation, any inhibition zone formed on the colony samples was being measured. Result: Levofloxacin has 19 (73%) sensitive Neisseria gonorrhoeae samples while the 7 (27%) others were resistant. Ceftriaxone were shown resistant to 20 (77%) sampels and only 6 (23%) samples was sensitive. Conclusion: There is a marked difference in sensitivity for Neisseria gonorrhoeae towards levofloxacin and ceftriaxone in in vitro. Levofloxacin has higher sensitivity than ceftriaxone.
