Description
Summary:Background : Skin moisture responds to environmental changes, skin conditions, age, or disease. In addition to the exogenous and endogenous risk factors, deficiency of natural moisture regulator substance or Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) and lipids contribute to the reduction of skin moisture. Moisturizers are used to retain skin moisture because they contain humectants, occlusive and emollient. However, if used in the long term synthetic ingredients in moisturizers can cause side effects that need to be replaced with natural ingredients such as 5% shea butter extract. Aim : Knowing the efectiveness of shea butter extract 5% to increase skin moisture. Method : An experimental study with pre-test and post-test control group design. 27 samples were using a moisturizer as a control in the left forearm and a moisturizer containing 5% shea butter extract in the right forearm for 28 days. Skin moisture was assessed by ODS before and after the application of moisturizer. Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney test were used to analyze the results. Result : 7 subjects (25.9%) experienced a decrease in ODS score, 18 patients (66.7%) remained, and 2 patients (7.4%) experienced an increase after using moisturizer as control with p = 0.096 (p> 0.05 ). 14 subjects (51.8%) experienced in decrease in ODS score and 13 subjects (48.2%) remained after using a moisturizer containing 5% shea butter extract with p <0.0001 (p <0.05). The difference in change ODS scores between the two groups is significant with p = 0.024 (p <0.05). Conclusion : 5% shea butter extract is effective to increase skin moisture. Keyword : Skin moisture, NMF, moisturizers, humectants, occlusive, emollient, 5% shea butter extract, ODS.
