Description
Summary:Background : Low back pain is a common problem in the society. 30-80% of cases were caused by herniated lumbal disc. Decreased quality of life is common among patients with low back pain. Objective : to investigate the relationship between pain intensity and disability with quality of life in patients with herniated lumbal disc. Methods : This study used cross-sectional design as its method and 25 patients with herniated lumbal disc were included. Patients were evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Results : In this study, mean of VAS score was 5.84 ± 2.2, mean of SF-36 total score was 1512.2 ± 597.9, and mean of RMDQ score was 13.9 ± 5.1. Very strong negative correlations were found between pain intensity and quality of life (r=-0.915, p=0.000) and between disability and quality of life (r=-0.835, p=0.000). Pain intensity was significantly correlated with physical functioning(r=-0.823, p=0.000), role physical (r=-0.684, p=0.000), vitality (r=-0.709, p=0.000), mental health (r=-0.882, p=0.000), social functioning (r=-0.549, p=0.004), bodily pain (r=-0.664, p=0.000), and general health perception (r=-0.628, p=0.001). Pain intensity had negative correlation with role emotional (r=-0.208, p=0.319), but not significant. Meanwhile disability was significantly correlated with physical functioning (r=-0.795, p=0.000), role physical (r=-0.637, p=0.001), vitality (r=- 0.765, p=0.000), mental health (r=-0.691, p=0.000), bodily pain (r=-0.674, p=0.000), and general health perception (r=-0.589, p=0.002). Disability also had negative correlation with role emotional (r=-0.205, p=0.325) and social functioning (r=-0.340, p=0.096), but not significant. Conclution : Pain intensity and disability were significantly correlated with quality of life in patients with herniated lumbal disc. Keywords : Herniated lumbal disc, pain intensity, disability, quality of life
